The Arc de Triomphe 2010 odds remain stable as the race draws near, but expert punters are beginning to discount the favourite Behkabad, as well as second favourite Fame and Glory.

Behkabad is at $4.00 while Fame and Glory stands at $5.00, with both horses having had excellent lead up runs that suggest a good chance in the Arc de Triomphe. While the average punter is still keen to take a punt on these likely champions, the cannier types suspect that the two will vie for position too early and burn themselves out before the final stretch.

The name being bandied about by the pros is Workforce, who is in the SportsBet Arc de Triomphe 2010 odds at $6.00 along with Planteur. While Workforce’s record isn’t perfect, he has shown a good ability to close the distance in the last few furlongs.

Workforce could certainly take the Arc if the two top favourites lose their heads, but this may not be as likely an outcome as some are giving it credit. Behkabad can back off and win later after contesting the lead early on, as shown in his Grand Prix de Paris win.

As we close in on the race, the 2010 Arc de Triomphe betting is remaining quite steady as the race favourites seem to be locked in. This is great news for punters who like to take early odds, as you can get odds right now that are much better than they will be come race day.

Still topping the early odds over at SportsBet is Behkabad at $4.50 to win. This really does all come down to Behkabad’s wins in top races at the same distance as the Arc de Triomphe (2400m), as well as his experience at Longchamp Racecourse. While $4.50 is quite short for early odds, it’s certain that these odds will get shorter on race day.

Comparatively, the second favourite Fame and Glory is not even close to being as well-prepared for the race, yet the Arc de Triomphe betting odds have him at just $5.00 to win. His Gold Cup and Coronation Cup wins may have gotten him a lot of support in Ireland and the UK, and it is the best prep for the Arc that a British horse could reasonably get, but is it good enough to beat Behkabad?

Another potential champion in the race is Workforce, in the Arc de Triomphe betting at $6.00 to win. In a short racing career, Workforce has taken two wins and a second place in five starts. Most of these races have been over 2000 metres in length as well, so the young colt has proven himself to be a stayer.

Planteur has also intrigued punters, and is getting odds of $7.00 to win in the 2010 Arc de Triomphe betting. Finishing behind Behkabad in his last two starts, Planteur has not won a race since his Prix Noailles win in April. Regardless, his losses to Behkabad were by razor thin margins and so the slightest shift of fortunes in his favour could give him the race.

The 2010 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is almost here, and bookies have already put out early fixed odds on the event.

Run this year on October 3, this famous Group 1 distance race is contested over 2,400 metres at Longchamp Racecourse and draws many of Europe’s top thoroughbreds. Leading in the early odds for the Arc de Triomphe at SportsBet this year is Behkabad at a very short $4.50.

The French 3 year old Behkabad is the winner of many French Group races, including a win earlier this year in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and a recent win in the Group 2 Prix Niel. Both of these races are also run at the 2,400 metre mark at Longchamp Racecourse, so you could not ask for better preparation than Behkabad has had.

Following closely in the odds is Fame and Glory at $5.00 to win. An Irish contender with wins in this year’s Gold Cup and Coronation Cup, Fame and Glory has plenty of experience at distances similar to that of the Arc de Triomphe. With the hot streak he is on at the moment, Fame and Glory does look to have the momentum to take the Arc.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sea The Stars has been retired from the racetrack.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by the stallion’s trainer John Oxx after a lengthy discussion with owner Christopher Tsui.

With six Group 1 wins to his name, the three year old was due to race in the Breeder’s Cup Classic in California.

However Oxx had decided that the distance to the race would prove too long for Sea The Stars.

The stallion has been in fast work training since March 3 and Oxx feels it is only fair to reward the horse for his superb racing efforts.

Best known for his speed, Sea The Stars has been compared to racing greats Dancing Brave, Mill Reef and Sea Bird.

He is the first horse to have won the Guineas and Derby in the same year since Nashwan twenty years ago.

With a total career earnings of 4.5 million pounds, it is yet to be determined whether the stallion will go on to a stud career.

However Tsui would be foolish to not put the champion horse to stud with many racing experts predicting that Sea The Stars could earn up to 40 million pounds a year in stud fees.

Sired by Cape Cross out of Urban Sea, Sea The Stars was foaled on April 6, 2006 in Ireland.

In his entire racing career, the stallion won eight out of nine runs including the Epsom Derby, Irish Champion Stakes, Juddmonte International and the 2,000 Guineas.

Sitting in the comfort of your own home, choosing which horse races you want to watch and deciding on how much to wager without the pressure from other punters or bookmakers. This is the new way to have a punt on horse races thanks to online betting. However for many beginners, knowing where to start with the online betting industry can be a daunting experience so here is a breakdown of online betting and how to bet on horse races.

Choosing a Bookmaker

Picking the right online bookmaker is a decision which is determined by what races you want to punt on and what betting types you want to use. Many bookmakers will specialise in specific big races while others will offer all races from the local country cup to the Melbourne Cup.

Here is a checklist of the key aspects of an online bookmaker:

Popularity – Highly recommended and larger bookmakers tend to be more reputable

Payment – There should be a wide range of payment options; Credit Card, Money Order, Direct Deposit, PayPal etc.

Customer Service – 24/7 friendly customer service is essential.

Betting Options – What is the range of horse races available? Does it suit your needs

Signing Up – Ensure you receive the free bonuses offered to you when you signed up. However if a bonus seems far too good to be true…most often it is

Security – Check with online chat forums whether the online bookmaker is consistent in paying their customers. Bookmakers which take weeks to payout should not be given money.

Choosing a Race

There are a range of different race categories to choose from and understanding what each race is will definitely help you to understand which races offer the best odds.

Maiden – For horses who have not yet won a race, the top races being the Maiden Special Weight races.

Stakes races – The best of all horse races which is restricted only for the top horses. These races produce the largest pay outs and can be either local or major races. The top stake races are graded from 1 to 3 with 1 being the best races e.g. Melbourne Cup. There are no restrictions on these races apart from age and sex.

Oaks – A race specifically held for 3 year old fillies.

Derby – Classically, this is a 2400m endurance race which is only offered to 3 year old horses.

Sprint race – A fast-paced race under one mile with normally only one turn.

Weight-For-Age – A WFA race requires the horse to carry a specific weight which is determined by their age. Generally, the categories are 3 year olds and 4 year olds and up.

Set-Weight – A SW race means all the horses in the race will be required to carry the same weight. Fillies and Mares are normally given an allowance of 1.5kg.

Handicap – Often the toughest race to win as each horse is given a carrying weight determined by their previous racing performance and weight. The handicap is designed to even out the competition in the race.

Choosing a Horse

Class – A horse in a higher class for the first time will generally not win the race so check which horses are new and their chances of beating the more experienced race horses.

Distance – Compare the horses’ times over the same lengths and determine which horses are most successful.

Post Position – How does each horse perform at different post positions and does their position affect their chances of winning.

Running Style – There are three main running styles: front runner, stalker and closer. A front runner is a horse who runs in the lead or in 2 lengths of the leader. A stalker rarely makes the lead but often gains momentum to overtake tired front runners. A closer runs best when there is a lot of early speed.

Trainer – Who is the trainer? Have they had much success previously?

Jockey – How much experience do they have? How do they handle their horses and will their style affect the horse’s performance?

Present Form – A horses current fitness level is a great indicator to their chance of success as any injuries can affect their winning chances.

Consistency – Analyse the horse’s past track record and determine whether they normally place quite high or if the horse’s placings fluctuate each time they race.

Weight – Although this isn’t considered very important a horse should generally not be carrying more than 59 kg. Anything over that amount is a bit risky.

Choosing a Betting Type

Straight bets -

Win (which horse will finish first)

Place (horse must place first or second)

Show (must place in top three)

Across the board wager (horse will take either of the first three places).

Quinella – Choosing two horses in no specific order to win first and second placings. Although the punter has good odds, a quinella will pay less than a trifecta.

Exacta or Perfecta – The punter must choose which horses will win first and second place in the correct order.

Trifecta – Picking the first three winning horses in the correct order.

Box trifecta – First three horses in any order.

Standout trifecta – Picking the winner and then the next two horses in any order.

Superfecta – Same as trifecta plus the fourth placed horse.

Daily Double – Predict the winning horses in any two races.

Running double – Selecting the winners of two consecutive races.

Quadrella – To pick the winners of four pre-nominated races on the card.

Straight six – Select the winners of six consecutive pre-nominated races.

The next step for hopeful punters is to get online and start betting on the many races available to them. The next major international races on offer are the Breeders Cup in the USA and the Japan Cup in Tokyo. Otherwise punters can wager on the Melbourne Racing Carnival including the world renowned Melbourne Cup.

After winning the 2009 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamps, Sea The Stars is set to head to America to compete in the Breeders’ Cup.

However many racing experts are questioning whether the colt’s trainer, John Oxx will make the journey.

With so little time between the two races, Sea The Stars would need to make a speedy recovery from the Arc in order to race at his best at the Cup.

Held on the 6th and 7th of November, the Breeders’ Cup will once again take place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

The series of Grade 1 races are offering purses between $500,000 and $5 million.

The colt will still have to fight for the top place as race favourite as many bookmakers seem to be having a hard time deciding whether Sea The Stars or Rip Van Winkle should be the favourite.

The next major race for the season will be the Japan Cup on November 29th in Tokyo.

This 2400m weight-for-age race is open to all good staying horses aged three years and up.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner up Youmzain is likely to make the trip to Tokyo however not before he tries to take out the Canadian International.

Last Sunday October 4 saw the 88th running of the most prestigious turf race in the world, the €4million Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp racecourse in Paris. Below are all the details of the race, including the place, age, jockey and trainer of all the starters.

Race Details:

Date: Oct 4 2009
Track: Longchamp
Distance: 1 ½ mile
Track Condition: Good (Turf)
Crowd Attendance: 48, 700
Sponsor: Qatar
Number of Starters: 19
Winning Margin: 2 lengths
Winning Time: 2:26.30

Race Overview:

From the opening of the gates, Grand Ducal ridden by Pat Smullen established the lead for the first quarter before being surpassed by stable-mate Set Sail. Jockey Sean Levey kept Set Sail two lengths ahead of Grand Ducal, manoeuvring the horse around the Grande Piste’s sweeping right turn, with the rest of the pack five lengths back.

Irish-bred champion Sea The Stars, who began the race as the clear favourite at 4/6, had a slow start stuck at the back in heavy traffic. Jockey Michael Kinane masterfully kept the colt down on the rail, eventually bringing them to ninth place.

As the pacesetters tired, Stacelita passed them and briefly took the lead.

Seemingly boxed in, Sea the Stars found room around the ¼ pole. Accelerating to a sprint, he broke away and by the 1/8 pole was in a clear lead, powering down the turf to secure a two length victory over runner-up for the last three Arcs, Youmzain.

Six-year-old Youmzain (20/1) and jockey Kieren Fallon came from 11th position to make a run at Sea The Stars late in the race, but was unable to catch the three-year-old.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Cavalryman (12/1) finished a head back in third after breaking from the outside.

After an astounding win by three-year-old Irish colt See The Stars in the richest turf race of them all, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, punters and racing fans across the globe are asking what’s next for this seemingly unstoppable champion.

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was the eighth consecutive win and sixth Group 1 victory for See The Stars this season, who is now estimated to be worth at least £60million. Considered by many as one of the greatest thoroughbreds in history, there have been claims that See The Stars has been retired in relation to issues surrounding the cost of insuring the horse for travel to America for a final run for the season. Trainer John Oxx has denied the rumours and it seems more likely that the colt will be kept in training and has much more to show yet.

The Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in California next month, November 7, has been named as a possibility for the horse. British bookmakers are already offering short odds of 3/2 for See The Stars to win, even though no formal decision has been made. Connections of the horse should announce next week whether Sea The Stars will run in the race.

With his impeccable track record and excellent form, there are no fitness or health concerns stopping Sea The Stars running. Oxx has said it is not a question of what the horse can do, but what is best for him in the long run and whether it is worth asking him to perform again after such a long and already very successful season.
